And I LIKE geometry.

It's official: Link's hat is a physical impossibility.

My tunic is almost done, thank the Sisters, never mind that Lynda BUTCHERED it last night. I tease. But the hat is proving far more difficult than the sleeves, the collar and the hem combined.

My original hat was a big ol' cone shape; that is, I cut a triangle out of a piece of fabric, sewed the long sides together, then stuck some elastic on the short end so it would sit on my head. That didn't quite work; the angle I used was too sharp, and it was too tight around my head but bulky just behind it. I didn't understand.

I tried to visualise the hat in three-space, and determined it would be another cone or at least some sort of conic section, perhaps, maybe, a sharply-angled ellipse? I gave up on that, and tried to cone again, this time out of two triangles, and cut off the equal corners so that the sides were straight (I had a five-sided figure). That seemed to work well, and I could add the little flappie on later, but it was too short (Note: Link's got this weird flap that doubles back over the front of his hat. I have no idea what purpose it serves. The source of all his blond powers, perhaps?!). It rested just below my shoulders, and though I attribute that to my currently poofy hair, that can't take all the blame. On top of that, it was still in two pieces, with its two yucky seams.

What I think I CAN do is trace the figure in one piece, so that I'd have a seam on the underside, where it wouldn't be seen. The front would have to be darted, and I could attach the flap on the inside and double back so that it would cover the darts. Right now, that's looking like my best option, but since Lynda cut my tunic short yesterday and we had to redo it, the problem arises: do we have the fabric for it? And we can't exactly go back to Fabric Bonanza because they're kind of closed. FOREVER.

Sometimes I wish Link were real so I could take his clothes and see how they work. That would have made all this crap SO much easier. Sigh....

I ♥ cosplay.

Edit, 10:37. I think I figured out the shape I need. I always get my best inspiration in the shower.
