Mike motherfucking Pelfrey!
So the game tonight was pretty awesome.
I showed up to Shea a little before five, as I had missed my bus. The schedule is completely inaccurate when I need it to be accurate (and when I don't, it's right on time). Anyway, I was distracted by Citi Field and took a few pictures before Lou and I went inside a mostly-empty stadium, and it was kinda fun. I don't remember the last time I got to the ballpark early enough to watch the Mets take BP. I'd post the pictures, but I'm kinda tired, and I don't think my batteries have enough life in them to do it now.
So the first inning was an EXPLOSION of runs as the Mets batted around. Jose Reyes grounded to short twice while The Other Reyes (Argenis) walked and stole second; he eventually scored on rookie Daniel Murphy's single. A pair of walks for the Carloses after Wright grounded to third loaded the bags for Murphy, and Tatis followed Murphy's single with one of his own. Schneider drove in the fifth run for the Mets in the first as he reached on a throwing error by Escobar, and though it didn't amount to much, Pelfrey tried to help his own cause with a single.
In the top of the third, Jeff Francoeur singled, advanced on a sac bunt, then scored on Blanco's single.
In the fifth, David Wright led off the inning with a homerun. That was kind of unexpected, considering he wasn't doing so well earlier, nor last night.
The Braves threatened in the sixth; Pelfrey gave up a single and two walks to the one, two, and three hitters, but McCann grounded into a double play, which scored a run. Shortly thereafter, a wild pitch scored Escobar, but Pelfrey didn't seem unsettled at all, and got Kotsay to fly to left.
It was peaceful and uneventful until the ninth, when Pelfrey took the mound again to wild cheers. The Mets had only had two complete games this season, so to get the chance to complete the game was fantastic. To start things off, Pelfrey came back from 3-0 on LAAAAAAAAAARRYYYYYYYYY to strike him out looking. He got the next two batters to fly out to left, and pitch his first career complete game, a 6-3 win over division rivals Atlanta. Unfortunately, the Phillies also won tonight, so no ground was gained, but the Mets are still sitting pretty in FIRST PLACE by a game and a half.
And Phill gave me a ride home. We stopped at a diner and had Belgian waffles. :D And I've been up for way too long; I'm exHAUSTed. Bedtime!
I'll call you when I wake up tomorrow, Erica. And, just so you all know, I'm feeling a little bit better today.
