日本の日 (Japan Day)
Despite having set my goal for nine-thirty, I left the house a step late, missed the bus, and got to 96th St. just after ten (I forgot buses run only twice an hour on Sunday mornings!). But that's okay, because had I not, I wouldn't have seen the not-too-shabby male Sephiroth as I left the train station. At the top of the stairs, I saw someone wearing a yukata that looked like Laura's, and then I realized it was Laura (and Erica with her, of course). We were on the same train!
As we were walking to the park, I felt my phone ring: voicemail. Apparently, I was supposed to work 3.5 to close today and I had to call the store or else I would have gotten written up. Oh, Michaels. You can't take a hint, can you? XD
So we went to the park (after I got COFFEEEEE), and stopped by a couple of the tents. We did calligraphy, so we got our names written for us, and then we each got to write something. Laura wrote our stupid ki-hayashi-mori-yama thing, I wrote Friday (because I really like the kanji!) and Erica rewrote Laura's haiku from last winter when she was in Japan. A recap:
冬の中
とりを見ました
うつくしい
(fuyu no naka/tori wo mimashita/utsukushii In the middle of winter, I saw a bird: beautiful. No, Laura, your haiku is beautiful. *_* (I never learned the kanji for tori or utsukushii ;-;))
Next to calligraphy was origami, so we did that; Erica and I folded cranes (which was "advanced," apparently), and snatched a piece of paper for Laura so she could do one later. She didn't take her turn properly because it was nearing noon and the lines for food were growing. While we spent a good two hours on the lines, we got gyudon, miso soup, gyoza, udon, and lots of tea. It was pretty awesome, and pretty free.
Afterwards, we decided to take a seat in the middle of the meadow. Michele came and joined us shortly after, and later on MACKS came on by (after some transportation difficulties, lolololololol). We enjoyed the concert, but were disappointed that the documentary some people were shooting at Cosplay Day (that included us) didn't show. We were also caught in the light rain. It was nice, because we had umbrellas. We also used those umbrellas as parasols when the sun was strong; we all walked away a little darker and a little red on our noses.
After the good times, Michele went off to go out to dinner with her grandmother and her brother, and Max headed back downtown. Erica found $5 in the street and so we stopped off at Starbucks for a drink. They made it incorrectly, so we got to keep it for free (and then they made the second drink incorrectly, too, but Erica was sick of waiting). By the time we were done, it was a quarter after six, and while we wanted to go to this thing with Italian Renaissance costumes, we weren't going to make it, so we decided to head back to the park for dance practice.
ANIMENEXT IS NEXT WEEK. We went over Madayade and the Zelda dance, which we seem to have pretty well, and Erica and I continued to teach Laura Tell Me. She looks like she's got it, and now she just needs to drill it into her head. Summarily, we also met this guy Samuel, who seemed pretty interested in ichiP! and said he could get a ridiculous amount of people to our next venue. We gave him a business card. After he (finally) left us alone, we were out of practice time -- the sun was setting and Laura was supposed to head home anyway -- so we made for the train.
On the way there, we were attacked by a cloud of gnats. It was NOT fun. D: The train ride was pretty uneventful as far as train rides go, so... the end.
Tomorrow: working on the Link costume. Probably by hand, but it's a shirt, so I'll be done in twenty minutes. XD
