Today was uneventful until about six hours ago when I headed out to the Mets game with my brothers. That's right, I've got two. Most of you have ever only heard me complain about Matt, but David's the other one. We're not really close, in personality or in age (he'll be 40 in a couple of months, lol).
Anyway. We got to the stadium a bit after the game started, but still in the top of the first, so we saw everything. Phill came around briefly and told me he was going to be down in field left, so he couldn't snatch me a hot dog or soda or anything. Darn. But it was good to see him, if only for a minute, even if I just saw him on Wednesday.
Bottom of the first, Reyes led off with a double. Cairo got on by way of error, Piazza brought Reyes home and Mientkiewicz brought Cairo in. 2-0 after one. Top of the fourth inning, Heilman gave up a hit, on something that should have easily been fielded, so dammit, cuz that was the only hit he gave up the entire game.
I'd like to see a Mets no-hitter sometime before I die, please. A perfect game, if I'm lucky. Remember that one that David Wells threw in '98? It was the day of my freakin' SWEET SIXTEEN (Sunday, May 17, 1998. Of course I remember; a girl only turns sweet sixteen once, you know!). It was hard to tell if the people gathered at my house were more interested in it or me (though I have to admit, I was pretty interested, too. Interested in that I was trying to JINX it. It was my birthday, dammit).
After a rocky start in the fourth, two on, at least one RISP, no outs, the Mets managed to come out of the inning unscathed. Piazza brought two more in in the fifth, and as much as I hate him, I cheered. Heilman went on to complete the game in just over a hundred pitches. There were a few things I would have liked, though. Warmer weather -- that's a given. I firmly believe night games before June should be illegal --, more un-no-name players (Cameron wasn't playing, Matsui wasn't playing, Wright wasn't playing....), and being able to snatch a seat less in left field.... though that Korean guy a few rows behind me was nice to look at. :D!
But the Mets won 4-0 tonight, so I can't complain terribly. After an 0-5 start, they're back at .500. Let's hope they keep winning. Some people at the stadium said that this is the Mets' year, but I can't honestly believe that. It took them a while to climb out of '96 and get into the playoffs. BUT I do think that it's possible for them to be a mediocre, .500 ballclub. I only hope that that holds fast.
And randomly, after the game, I was heading up to the 7 platform when I heard someone behind me call my name. Turns out it was Sarah Richter, someone I used to play softball with. We were on the same team for years; I loved that girl. It was good to see her again, if only briefly. And I met Chris! They've been together for like, forever....
I wonder if she's on Facebook. And Jessica Mermelstein, too. Oh, I miss Merms.
