So the NBA wants to impose a new dress code, which many players are upset about because they think it's over the top and -- I'm serious -- racist. I read an article on AOL and my stomach hurts from laughing so much.

This new dress code that the NBA will put into effect when the season starts is nowhere NEAR over the top. They want their players, when involved in league business, to wear suits (shirt, slacks and a sport coat), socks, shoes, no unnecessarily gigantic chains (they used the word "medallions" in the article. That gives you an idea of how BIG these things get) over their clothes or headgear (hats, do-rags, etc.) of any kind. Other banned items include sleeveless shirts, shorts, headphones and sunglasses while indoors. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but this sounds eerily like what one would wear to an office job. It's not an outrageous request. It's not mind-blowingly difficult. It's what most of America does every day.

Yet, Allen Iverson says that "I feel like if they want us to dress a certain way, they should pay for our clothes." Excuse me, what? You have MIIIIIIILLIONS of dollars, dude. Even if you buy a bunch of three-hundred dollar suits, you have NOT put a serious dent into your paycheck.

Others don't get the point of the dress code. Jason Richardson says, "One thing to me that was kind of racist was you can't wear chains outside your clothing. I don't understand what that has to do with being business approachable. ... You wear a suit you still could be a crook." Whether or not you're a "crook" has nothing to do with the dress code, Jason. It's the image you present. People are going to think better of you when you're in business clothes rather than casual ones, no matter how worth the image you actually are. Here's a shocker: people make snap judgements about a person based on his appearance. LE GASP! However, I disagree with the NBA slightly on the "chains" issue. I think small religious items (no more than an inch or two-long crosses, rosaries, or whatever) should still be allowed, but nothing like Flava Flav's stupid clock. :::rolls eyes::: Furthermore, the dress code does not state that only black players must adhere to this rule, which would indeed be racist. It just happens that most of the players who would fall victim to this rule happen to be black. That's different.

Earrings weren't mentioned in the article, but I'm willing to bet there's something about them in the dress code, too.

But this is something that nearly everyone who works in this country has to deal with: a dress code of some sort. Suck it up, pansies. You're not special just because you can toss a bouncy ball through a really-high-up ring. GET OVER YOURSELVES. Especially you, Iverson, because what you said only makes you look like a dumb ass nigger.

O NOES I SED TEH N WURD. Deal with it.

And that's why this dress code is supposedly racist: because the majority of the people who would have to change their images are black. I understand that their casual street attire and flashy (for lack of a better word, like, say, TACKY) jewelry is part of their culture, but they must realize that businesses have a culture too, and the NBA is indeed a business. While employed by a business, one must follow its rules if one would like to keep his job. Therefore, logic dictates that NBA players would have to follow this rule to remain NBA players, but a lot of them either refuse to see that logic or don't get it to begin with.

Another Iverson gem, for fun: "It's just tough, man, knowing that all of a sudden you have to have a dress code out of nowhere." Woe is me, the poor little rich girl! Yes, because the very definition of "tough" is not being able to wear the clothes you want all the time. What are you gonna argue next, Allen, team uniforms? Wanna play in your street clothes instead? How about shirts v. skins? SIT DOWN AND SHUT UP AND GO BACK TO THE FIELDS, BOY.

O NOES I WUZ RASIST AGAN LOLZ

Another Richardson quote (he, at least, seems to be slightly more levelheaded than Iverson): "[The dress code is] taking away our self expression." Have you ever worked a real job, dude (or even a psuedo-real job)? You're not supposed to have any self-expression in business. XD Being part of a business is not MEMEMEME; it's about the business. You're not supposed to draw attention to yourself. Everything you do is supposed to be for the greater good. You have to be -- are you ready for the pun? -- a team player. Jesus, man, were you never a Boy Scout?!

I'm sure there are players that agree with the dress code and see its merits, but the article wasn't quick to point any of them out. The best that was represented was Warriors coach Mike Montgomery, who (is white and) "believes players should look 'like a member of a basketball team' while on the bench," but said, "I understand both sides of the argument."

No, wait, I'm wrong. Stephen Jackson was quoted as saying, "I'll wear a suit every day. I think [the players] do need to look more professional because [the NBA] is a business" (Although, in his other quote, he admits he thinks the dress code is racist).

So I wonder what's going to happen when the season starts. I might actually watch a game or two, just for the drama.

In other news, I called Phill on my break today. He was on a ridealong (even though I asked if he was busy, stupid), but said that Gus underwent his surgery and he was okay. The tumor was removed, but he didn't know about the spleen. In fact, he didn't give me very many details, but I was just glad to hear that the puppy's all right. I'll call him again and see if I can get more information later. Thanks to everyone that offered support.

In other other news, someone called me a douchebag on the Vinny. XD! Everyone was all, "Venus don't reply!" but I couldn't have if I wanted to because I was at work. ;-; Stupid work. I would have just laughed, anyway. And it's a shame, too, because I liked QBri before he called me a douchebag. Ah, well.

Back to the mines... got some forums and stuff to read. Please, comment on anything you've read. ^_^
